Energy Efficiency & Building regulations
The building regulations are quite complex, but in simple terms the government has said that from 1st April 2005, to comply with building regulations, virtually every new boiler installed in England and Wales should be what is called a condensing boiler. These are very efficient boilers that use less fuel and use that fuel more efficiently.
What are SEDBUK ratings?
We have all become conversant to the energy efficiency ratings on white goods like fridges and freezers with the multicoloured tags showing the rating A to G.
There's now similar rating for boilers called the SEDBUK table. This stands for Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK and is the method developed under the government's energy efficiency best practice programme. This provides a basis of fair comparison of different models.

SEDBUK is the average annual efficiency achieved in typical domestic conditions, making reasonable assumptions about the pattern of usage, climate, control and other influences.
Condensing boilers will always fall in the A or B rated bands. This is a minimum of 86% efficient compared to many older boilers in homes struggle to be 50% efficient, so you can see how things can be immediately improved by having a modern, efficient boiler in your home.
